Project: Craig and Amy Hughes Residence

Location: Lake Annie Road, Hancock, Michigan

Designer: Dave Bach

Builder: Dave Bach Construction

Situated on an 80-acre parcel that was stripped of good timber before being sold to the Hughes, the house is sited on the most devastated and open portion of the property – the opening used for log loading operations. I had known Craig and Amy from our shared passion for mountain biking and cross country skiing. They sought me out for this project because they knew of my work from previous clients and house tours. A good client-designer relationship was obvious from the start. Craig, an energy modeling software designer, understood and appreciated high-performance design and passive solar principles. Amy, an artist and accountant, was most involved in spatial design and knew how to work in both sides of her brain. She remained involved and positive in spite of being diagnosed with MS midway through the design process.

Design highlights:

  • Simple elevations and building shape, using moderately priced, low maintenance exterior finishes. Save limited budget for interior finish.
  • First floor and building entrances to accommodate the disabilities that accompany MS
  • Main public entry sheltered, inviting, and an introduction to the level of finish and detail of the interior
  • Three-season porch convertible to year-round in future
  • Unify the interior into a modern interpretation of the traditional Craftsman-style, employing a high level of workmanship and local and common materials when possible
  • Use stained and scored concrete as the finish floors providing simple elegance, ease of cleaning, durability, and exposed mass
  • Provide a conditioned basement for storage and workspace
